Common Core English Language Arts and Math
Middle School literacy and math goals are based on the National Common Core Standards. Strong literacy skills are imperative to academic success, and our program focuses on all students developing strong reading and writing skills. Our mathematics curriculum and instructional materials foster a deep conceptual understanding required for successful future learning in high school and beyond.
We individualize literacy and mathematics instruction by implementing small-group instruction based on ongoing assessments administered throughout the school year. Students are grouped based on their strengths and growth areas and receive targeted instruction that maximizes their learning opportunities. Knowing that students will rely on their foundational skills in literacy and math for years to come, we support students in making progress toward individual academic goals while meeting or exceeding U.S. national standards.

At Creative Minds, we recognize that word identification, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension are essential for academic success in middle school. We use the SAVVAS – My Perspectives curriculum for grades five through eight. This integrated approach to reading and writing helps students build confidence in their writing and communication skills. Students learn from each other and share ideas through both in-class and out-of-class work, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
We utilize the Eureka Math curriculum at Creative Minds to guide our mathematics instruction. Eureka Math comprises four key components: fluency practices, concept development, application problems, and exit tickets. The curriculum incorporates hands-on learning experiences that encourage students to apply the skills and tools they acquire in each unit. We aim to foster a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics, preparing students for successful learning in high school and beyond.
Our middle school social studies program follows the Discovery Education approach, which aligns with the District of Columbia standards. The Social Studies Techbook provides a standards-aligned, inquiry-based learning experience that promotes literacy and critical thinking through the 5Es: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate. Covering topics from ancient cultures to current events transforms learning into engaging, real-world experiences.
